The Mindful Student Lessons



 In third grade, students’ life experiences inform their mindfulness practice. They take time to settle into their bodies and reflect on how their past has created their present. As they use their memories and their breath to consider the nature of their tendencies and relationships, they build a deeper self-awareness and intentionality. The third grade mindfulness practice encourages students to have greater control over their thoughts and choices, no matter what situation they may find themselves in.


Fly Five includes twenty mindfulness lessons per grade level, and each lesson aligns with the themes of an instructional unit. The lessons are designed to teach students strategies for recognizing and managing intense emotions. These mindfulness strategies help them stay successful in the moment and remain on a successful trajectory. The lessons are based upon our seven Fly Five Mindfulness Principles:

  • Put It in Neutral— To find stillness and observe yourself and where you are in the world
  • Take It Slow— To allow situations to unfold in their own time
  • Reset Experiences— To see things as if for the first time and adopt a learning perspective
  • Have Faith— To trust in yourself and in the capabilities of your body and mind
  • In the Moment— To hold a moment in awareness and acknowledge it as it comes, whether it is positive or negative
  • Reality Check— To check in and measure your expectations versus what is really happening
  • Suspended Judgment— To release expectations of attachment or rejection when they no longer serve you


Mindfulness is the intentional practice of focusing attention to recognize and manage emotions without suppression or judgment and to process those emotions in the appropriate area of the brain. Recognizing and managing emotions is an integral part of a student’s ability to thrive in peer relationships, school, their community, and beyond. Success in learning, life, work, play, relationships, and business requires a set of social and emotional competencies, namely cooperation, assertiveness, responsibility, empathy, and self-control.

The Mindful Student activities should be used to build a toolbox of strategies for students to name and manage their thoughts or emotions. When considering how to best implement these mindfulness activities, teachers can choose to implement them with the Fly Five lesson or as a separate component. Keep in mind that students will not become experts on a mindfulness strategy after one experience; therefore, students will benefit from revisiting activities throughout the week, month, semester, or school year.
